On behalf of the 2015-2016 Board of the Gabrielino High School Parent-Teacher-Student Association (GHS PTSA), I would like to thank you for your past support and encourage you to join the GHS PTSA again this year. Membership forms are available from Gabrielino’s Parent Portal (among the various registration forms) or on our informative and multilingual GHS PTSA website: http://www.gabrielinoptsa.org/membership-meetings--more.html
Volunteers will be staffing registration days (Friday August 7 and Tuesday August 11) so you can turn your forms in at the GHS PTSA table; forms will be available on site as well. The start of the school year is a crucial time for our organization in that money raised now can be immediately committed to our budget for supporting programs and students. The PTSA, through your memberships and donations, funds student scholarships, parent education, information programs, parent support networks, as well as the translation of our weekly informational emails and resource-rich website into four languages (English, Chinese, Spanish and Vietnamese). None of this would be possible without your generosity!
The GHS PTSA has and will continue to have communication and outreach as its primary focus. Last year, with your assistance, we were able to reach out to the broader Gabrielino community like never before. Some of the programs we hope to continue this year include: maintaining our informative website (www.gabrielinoptsa.org) in English, Chinese, Spanish and Vietnamese and sending out our popular weekly “This Week at Gabrielino” emails which detail all campus happenings to all our members in all four languages.
Last year, we hosted Parent-to-Parent Coffees, the Reflections Art Program, gave $300 to teacher PTSA members for classroom supplies and continued our “All In For Health” campaign, which has helped more than 350 people understand their options and obtain health insurance under the Affordable Care Act. Other popular programs included a Parent Empowerment Seminar, entitled “Supporting the Collegiate Goals of our Children” and a Teen Safe Driving Parent Workshop.
One more very exciting and vital new program was the development last year of a Special Needs Committee that, while operating under the umbrella of the GHS PTSA, serves the entire San Gabriel Unified School District community. This committee under the leadership of Cheryl Shellhart and Barbara Hernandez is creating a supplemental support network that works collaboratively with the district to help students with special needs and their families. For more information visit our Special Needs Committee page.
And finally, (yes, really!) in addition to the traditional PTSA functions, like helping with ASB events and hosting Teacher Appreciation meals (including the famous Staff Soup Lunch), the GHS PTSA has and will continue its tradition of awarding Senior Scholarships to student members. Thanks to your generosity, the GHS PTSA awarded almost $7,000 in scholarships to 29 graduating seniors this past May!! Please become a GHS PTSA member and, if you can, donate to the GHS PTSA --your support makes a world of difference to our students, families and the entire Gabrielino community!
Sincerely,
Russell Martin
President, GHS PTSA
