Local Control Funding Formula (LCFF)This is an exciting time for our kids and schools! California has a new law for funding schools, called the Local Control Funding Formula (LCFF). LCFF shifts spending decisions from the state to our school district and provides extra funding for students with greater challenges (i.e. English-language learners, low-income students and foster youth). Individual school districts are required to focus on eight key areas to help all students succeed, but are given more flexibility in how they spend the money.
As parents, our voices matter!
LCFF requires school districts to involve parents in planning and decision-making in formulating the Local Control Accountability Plan (LCAP) which must be adopted before July 1, 2014. The LCAP will establish goals for all students, define specific actions and determine the expenditures necessary to achieve those goals. What can you do now?

Local Control Accountability Plan (LCAP) CommitteeAs required by state law, our district has convened an LCAP Committee, which is tasked not only with developing district goals for all students, including the LCFF-targeted subgroups (i.e. English language learners, low-income students and foster youth), but also with defining the specific actions and determining the expenditures necessary to achieve those goals. Gabrielino's parent representatives are Mariah Cone and Jamie Sei. Mariah has a freshman at Gabrielino and has worked in education for 18 years, primarily for schools and districts with significant numbers of parents grappling with high poverty or lacking English skills, so she has first-hand experience with the target population of LCFF. Jamie has a sophomore and a senior at Gabrielino and has been active in SGUSD through the PTA, booster clubs and district committees since her oldest daughter was in elementary school. Although not specifically representing Gabrielino, Cheryl Shellhart, mother of a graduating senior, is also on the LCAP Committee as a parent representative for special needs students. We congratulate Mariah, Jamie and Cheryl on their selection to the LCAP Committee and thank them for their dedication to our school, our families and our students!
